About the Diploma in Languages and International Communication
The Diploma in Languages and International Communication is an exciting new qualification for students aged 14 to 19, which is due to be launched in schools from 2011. It will give students an insight into languages, culture and the wider world. Development of the Diploma in Languages and International Communication is the responsibility of the Diploma Development Partnership, which is being led by GoSkills, in close collaboration with CILT, the National Centre for Languages.
A new route into education and employment
The Diploma in Languages and International Communication is one of a range of new qualifications for 14-19 year olds. Diplomas are set to become one of the three main learning choices alongside GCSEs / A levels and Apprenticeships, and provide a recognised and respected route into further and higher education or direct employment.
Following the first teaching of ten new Diplomas in 2008 and 2009 (which include Construction and the Built Environment; Creative and Media; Business Adminstration and Finance; and Hair and Beauty Studies), a further seven Diplomas are in development. The Diploma in Languages and International Communication, announced in October 2007, will be available for first teaching from September 2011, bringing the total number of Diploma 'Lines of Learning' to 17.

Bringing language learning to life
Blending theory and practice, the Diploma in Languages and International Communication will show how languages can be applied at work and at leisure - bringing language learning to life. The innovative programme, developed and tested through a wide and comprehensive consultation process, also proposes to teach young people intercultural skills and introduce them to translation and interpreting. It will help them learn about the way language works as well as how we learn languages so they can become independent, lifelong language learners.
