Bringing language learning to life: Education professionals
The Diploma in Languages and International Communication is an exciting new qualification for students aged 14 to 19, which is due to be launched in schools from 2011. Blending theory and practice, this Diploma will show how languages can be applied at work and at leisure - bringing language learning to life. The innovative programme also proposes to teach young people intercultural skills, translation and interpreting skills, and will help them learn about the way language works to become independent language learners.
What this Diploma will mean for education professionals
Teachers and others delivering this Diploma will be given training and access to support resources and networks. It is being designed to appeal to students of all abilities and aspirations and will help them develop a range of practical and intellectual skills. Students taking the Diploma will receive a fully-rounded education, including the functional skills in English, maths and ICT and the thinking and learning skills that are particularly valued by employers and universities. Professional support and development

Gateway 4
The Diploma in Languages and International Communication will be taught from 2011 by local consortia - formed of schools, colleges, universities, employers, local authorities and other stakeholders. A three-stage selection process, known in 2009/10 as 'Gateway 4', reviews submissions from consortia interested in delivering the Diploma.
